Animal Buddy Info
DKC and DK 64 Animal Buddies
Rambi the Rhinoceros:
Gender: Male
Appearance:
A gray rhino with a big sharp horn.
Games:
SSBB Info:
A rhino friend who appears to help the Kongs in their adventures... from a wooden box, even! His destructive power lets his rider plow through enemies and super-dash to break through walls and other obstacles. Know what that means? It means uncovering more hidden bananas and life balloons!
Trivia (Super Mario Wiki):
None
Enguarde the Swordfish*
Gender: Male
Appearance:
A big blue swordfish.
Games:
I don't currently have a list of Enguarde appearances, but PM me if you have any info.
SSBB Info:
A swordfish animal buddy. Enguarde always appears on water levels where he can loyally help Donkey Kong get around. Much appreciated, right, DK? Complementing his cute, round eyes, Enguarde's pointed bill proves to be a powerful weapon. One thrust from it will easily down most underwater opponents.
Trivia (Super Mario Wiki):
* Enguarde gets his name from the French phrase used in fencing, "En garde".
* While Enguarde is presumably one character, two can be seen on-screen in the Donkey Kong Country level "Coral Capers".
Squawks the Parrot*
Note: Squawks has a large family, the most parrots are seen in DK64 (I think). Squawks has two other family members that are animal buddies: Flapper and Quawks.
I have a theory that Squawks was too young in DKC to hold anything but the torchlight, but he grows up somewhere between DKC and DKC2 and becomes able to carry Kongs. Evidence I have is that Squawks increases in size somewhere between the two games.
Gender: Male
Appearance:
A Green Parrot with yellow and red on the tips of his wings.
Games:
Along with Enguarde, I don't have much info. All I know is that the two have the same amount of appearances.
SSBB Info:
None
Trivia (Super Mario Wiki):
None
Winky the Frog
Gender: Male
Appearance:
Winky is a Green and Red frog that is big enough to carry the Kongs around.
Games:
SSBB Info:
None
Trivia (Super Mario Wiki):
* Flibbits, the tropical frogs from Banjo-Kazooie, were based on Winky's design.
Expresso the Ostrich
Gender: Male
Appearance:
A big ostrich that can fly despite his small wings and large body.
Games
